Seducing a predominantly English-speaking audience by singing in French? On one of the most prestigious American music scenes, the Belgian pop superstar Angèle has just proved, like her compatriot Stromae before her, that the language barrier was not insurmountable for a French-speaking artist.

Last Friday, the 27-year-old singer behind the hits Swing your what et To forget everything made a splash on one of the Californian sets of Coachella, one of the largest and most popular music festivals in the world.
With the exception of his duet Fever with Dua Lipa, her entire performance was in the language of Brassens. The public did not seem unduly confused.
Reached by Zoom on Tuesday in California, Angèle confessed that she had no idea what to expect when she began this North American tour which, in addition to several dates in the United States, will take her, the week next, in Quebec and Montreal.
“We were quite surprised to see that there were a lot of people who don’t speak French and who are curious. It’s hypercool because it means that there is still a long way to go, that we can come back to do other concerts, especially since I want to sing in French because it is in this language that I expresses me best. »
Happy with her French public
In the same vein, Angèle specifies that she does not reject English, recalling that she grew up listening to American pop. An international career? “I think it goes through English if you want to reach a scale that is very important,” she agrees.
She admits, however, that she would find it difficult to embody her songs and texts, often carrying important messages, in English. Anyway “there is no desire to conquer anything as territory. »
“Me, she says, I am already very happy to have such a large audience in Belgium, France and Quebec. It’s great because I know he’s loyal. As long as I can keep this audience, which has been there since the beginning, I’m happy. »
transformed artist
One thing is certain, in Quebec, it returns to conquered territories. A Videotron Center and two Bell Centers await the one that Quebecers have adopted since their first visits, at the time of the album Bro.
They will see a transformed performer on stage, more in control, better equipped to handle large crowds. During the pandemic, she took dance and singing lessons.
“In the beginning, I was learning on the job. I went headlong, but there was no dancing, no vocal technique. Sometimes it might be awkward, but at the same time I have no regrets. When I look at the images of these concerts, it was touching, sincere. I was so happy to be there. »
