Anesthetist Giovanni Quintella Bezerra, 32 years old, arrested since July 11 of last year on charges of raping a sedated patient after giving birth at a hospital in São João de Meriti (Fluminense), had his professional registration revoked definitively by the Regional Council of Medicine of Rio (Cremerj) this Tuesday, 28.
Thus, he can no longer practice medicine in Brazil. Since July 12, 2022, the body has provisionally suspended its registration, but now the decision is final. According to Cremerj, the decision was taken unanimously during a plenary trial that took place in the afternoon.
Bezerra was arrested red-handed in the early hours of July 11, moments after being filmed by health professionals at the Hospital da Mulher Heloneida Studart, located in Vilar dos Teles, in the São João de Meriti neighborhood.
Right after a delivery, during a tubal ligation procedure previously authorized by the patient who had given birth, the doctor, protected by a cloth that served as a curtain, placed the penis in the patient’s mouth. The woman was sedated more than necessary, and she had no way of knowing what was going on.
After about ten minutes, he removed his penis and wiped the woman’s mouth with a paper napkin. After seeing the footage, colleagues of the doctor called the Police Station for Women’s Care (Deam) of São João de Meriti.
The chief delegate, Bárbara Lomba, went to the hospital and arrested Bezerra red-handed. Upon receiving a voice of arrest, the doctor said he wanted to understand what was going on and was informed by the police that there was a video proving his conduct.

Professionals who worked with the anesthetist suspected the anesthesiologist’s conduct because of the amount of sedative that the doctor applied to patients in labor. The situation was noticeable because the mothers anesthetized by Bezerra did not react with the usual joy when meeting their children, since they were still under the effect of excessive medication.

On July 10, a Sunday, the doctor arrived for work and participated in two cesarean sections in operating rooms where recording was not feasible. In the third, it was possible to hide a cell phone in a closet and perform the recording.
Arrest in flagrante delicto was converted into preventive. Bezerra is currently being held in the Pedrolino Werling de Oliveira prison, known as Bangu 8, in the Gericinó penitentiary complex, in Bangu (west zone of Rio). He is accused of rape of a vulnerable person and, if found guilty, could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison. The process is conducted in secrecy of Justice, so as not to expose the victim.
