Andrzej Duda was asked regarding the words of Donald Tusk, who during the conference following meeting with Chancellor Olaf Scholz in Warsaw, in the context of reparations for Poland from Germany for the destruction during World War II, replied, among other things, that “Chancellor Scholz says openly that in the formal and legal sense, reparations are closed from the German point of view”. – He has arguments for this thesis – he added, noting that Poland was forced to waive reparations. The president was also asked regarding the German proposal to compensate for the wrongs done to Poland during World War II – support for living survivors and the construction of the House of Remembrance in Berlin.
Andrzej Duda: Poland has never effectively waived reparations
– Regardless of the commemoration, let us remember that we suffered enormous losses as a result of the unprovoked German aggression in 1939 and throughout World War II, when Poland was occupied by Germany, when Poles were locked up in concentration camps, deported to Germany for forced labor, tortured and murdered – he added.
– I do not share the position that Polish authorities, any Polish authorities, whether communist or otherwise, have ever effectively waived the right and claims to compensation for the wrongs inflicted on the Polish nation and the Polish state during World War II – added the president.
