He reportedly keeps for himself the goal of a face-to-face fight with Kyriakos Mitsotakis and after his survival and re-election he will fight as hard as he can to get to that position.
His staff are told that by the end of the year, PASOK will be over 20% in the polls, will have narrowed its gap with New Democracy even further, with the goal of “looking it in the eye” in 2025, and will have leave SYRIZA 12-15 percentage points behind.
His first moves showed that on the one hand he sees things with more composure and confidence than in the recent past. That is why he assigned roles to his political opponents, Pavlos Geroulano, Anna Diamantopoulou, and also to Haris Doukas, giving them a role in the new leadership group which is assumed to be the 9-member Coordination and Political Center. At the same time, however, he strengthens the day-to-day operation of the party with executives of his absolute confidence, creating a second level of management controlled by him. The assignment of the duties of head of Political Planning to Anna Diamantopoulou was a clear signal for PASOK’s ideological position at the Center, which displeased Haris Doukas and his staff, who want to keep communication channels open with SYRIZA and Alexis Tsipras.
Nikos Androulakis’ immediate goal is to convince PASOK of its autonomous course and that it is the representative of European social democracy in Greece. To cut off any script of collaborations etc. and to communicate with the dissatisfied voters of SYRIZA, but also of the ND, who place themselves from the Center-Left to the Center-Right. The ultimate goal is to convince that he can turn PASOK back into a party of power and himself acquire the profile of a “primitive” political leader. That is, what he failed to do from his first election in 2021 until today.
