If, on the one hand, most women already know that they are destined for menopause, 57% of men are unaware of the existence of andropause, according to a survey carried out by Brazilian Society of Urology.
Andropause is a term created in analogy to menopause, a phase in which there is a drop in hormone production in the female population. Generally, the situation happens in a similar way in men from the age of 40 and the impacts go beyond sexual desire.

See 6 ways to increase libido and improve sex life
According to the doctor specialist in hormonal implants Hugo Gatto, andropause can be as uncomfortable as menopause, as both cases are caused by the decrease in hormones that the human body needs to live with quality.
He mentions the main symptoms:
- Reduction or loss of libido;
- Erectile Dysfunction;
- Decreased fertility;
- Decreased body hair;
- nipple swelling;
- Loss of bone and muscle mass;
- Increased body fat;
- Strength reduction;
- Tiredness;
- Difficulty in memorizing and concentrating;
- Sadness or depression in some cases.
The doctor explains that, during the period, there is a decrease in the production of testosterone, a hormone essential for sexual behavior, but which also fulfills other important functions in the body.
“Testosterone is also directly linked to very important metabolic activities, such as the production of blood cells, in the bone marrow, in bone formation, in the metabolism of lipids and carbohydrates and in liver function, in addition to the close relationship in the physical and psychological alterations of men associated with aging”, he says.
hormone replacement
One of the main treatments for andropause, as in women, is hormone replacement with testosterone. Therapy is indicated for all men who have symptoms of the condition and who have no contraindication for use.
Before resorting to therapy, the patient needs to prove the drop in the rate of hormones. Gatto explains that replacement is evaluated according to symptoms and clinical signs reported by the individual and their biochemical tests, such as testosterone levels and other hormones in the blood.

When well indicated and carried out with professional follow-up, male hormone replacement brings many benefits, such as weight loss, improved libido, increased bone density and muscle mass.
The doctor ends by explaining that every use of hormones can have side effects, but a correct prescription tends to reduce the risk of problems.
“For a good treatment, without adverse effects or with the smallest possible ones, the doses must be totally individualized and walk according to the patient’s needs”, points out Gatto.
