Andrew McKenzie, a scientist who heads the Shell oil company

Andrew Stewart Mackenzie is a Scottish businessman and chairman of the British oil and gas company Shell. He also served as CEO of BHP Billiton, the world’s largest mining company.

Andrew Stewart Mackenzie was born on December 20, 1956, and grew up in Kirkintiluk, Scotland, and was educated at the University of St Andrews, where he graduated with a BA in Geology in 1977, and completed his higher education at the University of Bristol, He obtained his PhD in organic chemistry in 1981.

McKenzie was a postdoctoral researcher at the British Geological Society and a fellow at the Humboldt Center. He also worked at the Nuclear Research Center in Jülich, Germany, and published more than 50 research papers.

In 1983, Mackenzie joined BP’s research department, worked his way up to BP Finance, and then became Head of Capital Markets. After 22 years spent in BP, he resigned from his position as head of the petrochemicals group in the company. In April 2004, McKenzie joined Rio Tinto as CEO of the Industrial Metals Division. In June of 2007, he took over the position of CEO, Diamonds and Minerals. From 2005 to June 2008, he held the position of Secretary of the Demos Research Center.

Mackenzie became CEO of BHP Billiton in November 2013, succeeding Marius Kloppers.

In 2014, McKenzie was awarded $7.12 million in financial compensation. On January 1, 2020, McKenzie resigned as CEO of BHP Billiton, to be succeeded by Mike Henry.

In March 2021, McKenzie was chosen to replace Chad Holiday as chairman of Royal Dutch Shell, a position he held in May 2021.

Mackenzie was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London for the Improvement of Natural Knowledge in 2014.

Andrew Mackenzie is considered one of the most influential scientists in the world, having made fundamental contributions to geochemistry early in his career, particularly in relation to the formation of oil. For most of his career, he was a leader in the energy and mining sectors, working for BP and Rio Tinto, as well as BHP Billiton. He also made major innovations in the technical and business fields within these companies, and was prominent as a scholar in the commercial world. Mackenzie was knighted at the Queen Elizabeth II Birthday celebrations in 2020, for his services to business, science and technology and to strengthening relations between the United Kingdom and Australia.

It is noteworthy that Mackenzie speaks five languages, and met his wife, Liz, while they were students at St Andrews.
