Andrés Fernández starts the modern pentathlon with a good round of fencing

At 22 years old, Fernández made her debut in the top Olympic event in the qualifying rounds of modern pentathlon fencing.

Guatemalan Andrés Fernández had a promising start at the North Paris Arena, venue for the first qualifying round of modern pentathlon fencing.

The pentathlon is one of the most demanding events for an athlete, as it involves mastering up to five different athletic events, which is why it turns pentathletes into complete athletes.

In this first round of fencing, the combat format consisted of 17 rounds in a round-robin format, thus awarding the first points for the jumping, swimming and laser run events that will take place on August 9.

Fernández, who was competing in the Olympic Games for the first time, has made a strong start on her quest to reach the pentathlon final, which will take place on August 10.

Each athlete entered the North Paris Arena knowing that they would fight 35 matches, and after the first eight rounds, Fernandez had a total of 9 wins and 8 losses, temporarily occupying 18th place with 170 points.

As the rest of the rounds and matches went by, the European athletes took the lead with their victories, while the Guatemalan continued among the best Latin athletes.

After completing the 17 rounds, Andrés was placed in the 24th position with 15 wins and 20 losses with a total of 200 points.

This result also leaves Fernández in third place in the Latin American rankings, only surpassed by the Mexican Emiliano Hernández and the Ecuadorian Andrés Torres, in 21st and 22nd places respectively.

At around 6.30 it will be Sophia Hernández’s turn, also from Guatemala, to make her debut in the women’s modern pentathlon.
