PARIS. Andreas Kramer, 27, dreamed of an Olympic final.

But in the semis, the Swede finished second last of all.

– It’s empty now, he says.

No Swedish man has been in an Olympic final in the 800 meters since 1952.

Today, Andreas Kramer dreamed of succeeding in that feat. But then it was about being top two.

Was last

And it looked bright for a long time in the semi.

The Swede went up close after just under 400 meters and drilled on in the lead until the race. Then the competitors flew past the 27-year-old, who finished last in his heat in a paltry time of 1.46, 52.

– It was his weakest race in quite some time, says Tommy Åström in Kanal 5.

Kramer, who ran under 1.44 as recently as a month ago, was broken afterwards.

– It’s empty now. I’ve been charging for this all summer. Now I don’t know what to do, he says.

– On paper, I shouldn’t be in the final, but I think it’s a realistic goal. But it’s tough to lead from the top, it wears on my strength. I get a little run over during the race, I think it affects in some way.

Self-critical

Did you get run over a lot?

– Yes, quite a lot. You probably have to count on that when you’re at the top. There is a disturbed rhythm when you run. I don’t think it was anything that ugly directly, but it interferes with my running and to some extent affects how fresh I am at the end.

Was it the right tactic?

– No it wasn’t, I could have finished last and gone for a top two position. We talked about lowering the pace, I should go up and speed it up. Until then, I’m doing a lot right. Now that tactic didn’t work, so now in retrospect I would have liked to set it up in a different way, he says self-critically.

Algerian Djamel Sedjati won the race ahead of Botswana’s Tshepiso Masalela.
