The Construye Movement reported this Saturday, with just over a week to go before the presidential elections in Ecuador, that it chose Andrea González Náder as the replacement for the assassinated Fernando Villavicencio.

González Náder was the vice-presidential candidate of the candidate riddled with bullets this week at the exit of a political event, and whose crime has convulsed Ecuadorian society.

“Andrea González Náder was the person chosen by Fernando Villavicencio and by the Construye Movement to replace the President in his absence. Consistent with that, the governing bodies of the Movement have ratified this decision and Andrea González will be registered as a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic of Ecuador,” they reported in a statement.

Now they still have to define the vice-presidential formula of González, a person who “will be chosen among the most trusted people and who have shared the struggles of our comrade Fernando Villavicencio” and will be announced in the next few hours.

“In terms of legality, Article 99 of the Democracy Code states that the presidential candidate is a one-person candidacy, therefore the Movement will replace the presidential candidate by placing Andrea González as president,” the letter adds and concludes by assuring that “Andrea it will guarantee the legacy of Fernando Villavicencio and millions of Ecuadorians will accompany it in this purpose”.

Article 112 of the Electoral Code endorses the Movement to carry out said action since it establishes that “if a candidate for popular election dies or is in a situation of proven physical, mental or legal disability before the respective elections, the political organization or alliance that sponsors that candidacy may be replaced with another candidate from the same political organization or alliance.

However, the National Electoral Council has not ruled on its acceptance or rejection of the new candidate who, if ratified, will participate this Sunday in the debate along with the rest of the candidates.

What the organization did advance is that the ballots that will be used next Sunday, August 20, will bear the image of Villavicencio since, according to point 112, when said event “occurs before the corresponding ballots are printed, it will be New ballots will be printed with the replacement’s photograph and name; otherwise, the already printed ballots will be used, counting the votes cast for the previously registered candidate for the new candidate”.

The appointment of González Náder to succeed Villavicencio in her career already seemed like an open secret for days and the candidate herself was determined to continue her partner’s fight. Even politics signed this Friday together with the candidates Xavier Hervas, Bolivar Armijos, Otto Sonnenholznez and Yaku Pérez the signing of the Agreement for Security and Social Peace of Ecuador.

“We promise to join efforts for the future to guarantee governance and support any initiative that is aimed at providing security to the people of Ecuador,” she wrote in her X account and emphasized that “the political history of this country MUST change ”.

Villavicencio was shot dead last Wednesday during a political rally in Quito, which prompted immediate repudiation from the political arch and two days of farewell ceremonies and tributes.

The Police carried out a series of raids on various homes in Conocoto and the south of Quito, from which six Colombians suspected of having participated in the homicide were arrested. Two of them were present at the crime scene while another was killed at the time by the authorities, Interior Minister Juan Zapata added.

Precisely the Ecuadorian authorities ordered this Saturday the transfer to a maximum security prison of the leader of one of the main organized crime groups, “Los Choneros”, and indicated by the presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio of having threatened him before he was finally assassinated. .

President Guillermo Lasso reported that alias Fito was transferred to La Roca prison, in Guayaquil, “for the safety of citizens and detainees. Ecuador will recover peace and security. If violent reactions are generated, we will act with full force.” The Rock was closed for a while following a mass leak and then reopened in November.
