In an era defined by constant connectivity, Italian metal band LACUNA COIL confronts the complexities of the digital age on their upcoming album, “Sleepless Empire,” set for release on February 14, 2025, via Century Media Records. Vocalist Andrea Ferro, reflecting on the profound impact of technology, observed,”It’s a new world entirely for everybody,I guess. And everybody had to deal wiht the switch from analog life to digital life.”
The album’s title serves as a poignant commentary on this pervasive digital influence. Cristina Scabbia,LACUNA COIL’s co-vocalist,elaborates,”we chose that title because it was representing the times that we are living today. We’re always awake, constantly trying to be productive, super connected with the rest of the world, but at the same time, we’ve never been so disconnected and anxious and feeling that we need to prove something, that we need to be present all the time, because if not, we are forgotten by the rest of the world.”
Ferro acknowledges the challenges of navigating this digital landscape, stating, “But that’s not only for the new generation — also for us, it’s the same. So it’s not a critique to the kids; it’s just the way it is nowadays, and we all had to deal with this.”
Despite the inherent anxieties, LACUNA COIL recognizes the undeniable advantages technology brings. scabbia emphasizes, “I am putting myself in the sleepless empire as well, so it’s not a criticism. It’s just a realization, because I am part of that generation that saw it all and saw it coming and saw how fast the technology developed and how big the changes were, so I am trying to take the best out of the past to bring it in the future and the present, because I think that we should take advantage of technology. I mean, the fact that we are talking right now through a screen,it’s one of the most gorgeous things of technology,as if not,you would have to come to my place or me at yours,or we would have to travel somewhere to meet in person, which would be amazing. But this way, you save time, you can save four hours so you can go spend time with your family.
The band has successfully adapted to the evolving music industry, embracing new avenues for income generation. Ferro explains, “Before, obviously, when you were selling physical records, a lot of physical records, it was way more income from that source, while nowadays, although we do still sell a lot of physical records because metal is one of the few genres where people still want to have the record — either vinyls, even cassettes or special-edition CDs — so we’re lucky we still sell pretty good numbers of that. but we have found new ways of making income for the band. There are some things that before [were] completely unthinkable, like sponsorship or somebody wants to put an ad on your Facebook page or Instagram page, obviously, we try to always do it with brands that we actually belong to us, to our culture, to our background, not something that doesn’t — you’re not gonna put an iron board or something like that, or a soda — it’s gonna be something that we use or we belong or we share, we like. And so there’s new ways of making the band financially work, and also the touring, more merchandise. There’s different ways. but I think we’ve done pretty well adapting to the changes.”
LACUNA COIL’s journey reflects the broader narrative of artists navigating the digital age. Their willingness to embrace new technologies while staying true to their artistic vision serves as an inspiration for musicians navigating the evolving landscape of the music industry.
Embrace the evolving landscape, adapt, and find innovative ways to connect with your audience. LACUNA COIL’s “Sleepless Empire” is a testament to the enduring power of music in an increasingly digital world.
Finding Balance in a Digital World: Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil
Cristina scabbia, vocalist for the iconic Italian metal band Lacuna Coil, recently shared her perspective on navigating the digital world, highlighting the importance of balance and mindful engagement. In an era defined by constant connectivity and the pervasive influence of social media, Scabbia’s insights offer valuable guidance for individuals seeking to cultivate a healthier relationship with technology.
“Technology is good if used wisely,” Scabbia remarked, emphasizing the potential benefits while underscoring the need for conscious usage. She shares a personal anecdote about prioritizing an in-person experience over online interaction, stating,”I can go to watch AC milan tonight with Andrea Ferro at the stadium instead of traveling.” This suggests a preference for face-to-face connections over virtual substitutes.
While acknowledging the allure of progress and the convenience technology offers, Scabbia cautions against overreliance and the dangers of wasted time. “When I wake up in the morning, the first thing I do is grab my phone and see the messages,” she admitted, revealing a common struggle. She urges readers to consider the value of their time, stating, “all the time that we waste in stuff that doesn’t really enrich us as persons, it’s going to be wasted.”
The impact of Social Media
Scabbia delves into the profound influence of social media, especially on younger generations. She observes that the curated nature of online platforms can create unrealistic expectations and lead to feelings of inadequacy. “they see beautiful lives in other people’s social medias, and they think that that’s reality,” she explained, highlighting the potential for comparison and self-doubt.
She encourages individuals to develop a critical perspective and focus on their own journeys, emphasizing the importance of authenticity.”They tend to compare to each other,” she continues, “They feel less than they are and they feel depressed and frustrated because they don’t feel enough. So at least, just like the fact that I was born earlier kind of gave me a sort of a shelter that it’s a sort of a filter that it’s, like, okay, I don’t need to compare myself to another person because, of course, this is my life. That’s their life.”
“Maybe not everything they’re showing [is] true. Most probably not everything they’re showing [is] 100 percent true. Maybe it is,but who cares? I should look at my life. I should look at what I’m building. I should look at what I’m living. I should look at the people, the real people around me and real life around me. It should be a balance. As everything, you just have to keep the right balance.”
The Vicious Cycle of Digital Stimulation
Scabbia further explores the cyclical nature of digital stimulation, highlighting how constant engagement with social media can contribute to anxiety and a perpetual state of busyness.”There is this weird cycle for all of us that we’re working hard because we have so many inputs,” she observed. “Then we try to detach ourselves and relax watching other stuff on other social medias, thinking that they’re entertaining. And they create even more anxiety. So it’s a cycle that could be dangerous… But it’s not all bad.”
While acknowledging the potential downsides,Scabbia recognizes that technology can also be a source of learning and entertainment. ”The sleepless empire,it’s basically an empire with people that never sleep, that [are] always doing stuff, which could be good and could be bad as well.”
She encourages a mindful approach, suggesting readers develop strategies for managing their time and reducing dependence on technology.”Maybe I shouldn’t have so much anxiety if I answer 10 minutes after,” she suggested, offering a simple yet powerful practice for reclaiming control over digital interactions.
Lacuna Coil’s Embrace of Gaming Culture
Scabbia’s observations on technology extend beyond social media, encompassing the realm of gaming. Lacuna Coil has consistently demonstrated their appreciation for gaming culture, evident in their past collaborations with gaming companies and the creation of unique gaming experiences for their fans.
Their latest album, “Sleepless Empire,” features a dedicated oracle game designed with custom-made dice, available exclusively as part of the album’s box set. This innovative project further solidifies Lacuna Coil’s connection to gaming and demonstrates their commitment to engaging with fans in unconventional ways.
“Sleepless Empire”: A Cinematic Sonic Journey
“sleepless Empire” is a sonic adventure comprising 11 tracks, each meticulously crafted to evoke a specific time and place. The album’s dark, cinematic atmosphere reflects Lacuna Coil’s signature sound, a blend of heavy metal, gothic rock, and ethereal vocals that has earned them a devoted following worldwide.
Dan, the band’s guitarist and producer, is credited with shaping the album’s sonic terrain, contributing to its immersive and captivating soundscape.
Lacuna Coil’s “Sleepless Empire” offers more than just music—it’s a journey into a world of darkness, introspection, and ultimately, the enduring power of human connection. Cristina Scabbia’s insights on balancing technology and real life serve as a timely reminder for us all to navigate the digital world with intention and find purpose beyond the screens.
