André Tourigny is still floating on cloud nine a few days following winning the World Hockey Championship with the Canadian squad.

The team’s head coach recounted how he experienced the event during an interview with Jean-Charles Lajoie on Wednesday.

“There is a lot of pressure. Players make the sacrifice of coming to Europe for a month following the season. You want it to be an extraordinary experience. For all your country, you want to win. It brings us all together for a common cause. Hockey is our national sport. We have great pride. Finland was number one, but we have just regained our title of world number one. I take a lot of pride in that.”

The Quebecer gave a lot of credit to his goalkeeper, Samuel Montembeault, who shone during the tournament.

“I can tell you that he was good in tabarnouche. He was really solid. Not only did he keep good games, but he was calm, reassuring and in control all the time. He really did a good job.”

Tourigny also responded to those who denigrate the level of play at the World Hockey Championship, citing Latvia as an example.

“Do you think the players are not ready to die on the ice to win for their country? The determination of the players is immense. They are ready to do anything. Before the match once morest Latvia, I showed two sequences to my players. One guy throwing head first to block a pitch and another guy opening his hand to stop a shot from the blue line. He makes a stop like Jacques Plante. There is not a guy who will do that in the NHL, but they will do it for their country. It gives a tournament that is very hard to win.

The man who also leads the Arizona Coyotes in the NHL admitted to not having had time to worry regarding the precarious situation of his team while he was with Canada.

“What I don’t control, it doesn’t affect me. I have nothing to do with it. I have no idea. I follow it on Twitter like you guys. My job is to lead the team. What is said in the media, it does not affect me that much. You would be surprised to know how much I don’t give a damn regarding this case.
