Three goals, three points and a quiet evening: the Mauves did the job in Westerlo, they added three points to their tally and temporarily moved to within one point of first place in the Union.
After the victory snatched in the last seconds last week once morest Westerlo, Sporting Anderlecht hoped to experience a less stressful evening at Westerlo. With a little surprise in the basic eleven: the tenure of Benito Raman, preferred to Alexis Flips to compensate for the absence of Thorgan Hazard, absent once more Friday evening.
Missed chances before the opening goal
And the number 9 of the RSCA, who had not started since the end of August in the championship, played a major role from the start of the meeting. He first took advantage of a big mistake by Westerlo’s central defenders in the sixth minute to alert Sinan Bolat, who pushed back into the feet of Anders Dreyer. The Dane had the goal open and should have finished, but he sent the ball over.
Five minutes later, Raman tried his luck a second time, but failed to hit the target. But, in the 20th minute of play, he took advantage of a clear phase from Sporting to open the scoring with a perfect cross shot. The former Gant player even had the opportunity to double the lead in the 35th minute, but Bolat dove at his feet to send him the ball.
The Campinese reaction
An occasion which had the merit of waking up the Campinois. Clearly dominated until then, KVC Westerlo came out of its shell in the last ten minutes of the first minute, with big chances up for grabs. It took a save on the line and several saves from Schmeichel to prevent the visitors from equalizing. And, just before the break, Griffin Yow’s shot left the Danish goalkeeper on the spot, but the ball ended up a few centimeters from the right post of the Anderlecht goal.
Anderlecht makes the break and wins
Sporting, however, found some color following returning from the locker room and might have quickly made the break. But Stroeykens’ shot missed just wide of the target and Dolberg’s shot, deflected, landed on the bar of Bolat’s goal.
Raman also had his opportunities to double the lead. At the hour mark, the former Schalke player struck twice. His first attempt failed above the target, the second… next to it. But Anderlecht’s efforts were rewarded. In the 67th minute, Thomas Delaney reassured Sporting and a quarter of an hour later, Kasper Dolberg finished the job.
Only one small downside for Anderlecht, since Westerlo saved the honor at the end of the match via Jordan Bos. Without consequence for Sporting, which logically wins and returns to a small point behind the Union at the top of the ranking.
