Anderlecht’s Authorization of Convictional Symbols: A First in Brussels Sparks Neutrality Debate

Let us point out, however, that the MR did not intervene in the vote since its two representatives left the room beforehand.

This is a first in Brussels: Anderlecht authorizes the wearing of convictional symbols in the administration

DéFI regrets the vote which it describes as “a heavy defeat for neutrality”.

“Certainly, the voted text, unlike the initial text of Ecolo, does not ipso facto lead to direct and immediate authorization of convictional signs, and refers the implementation of this authorization to a working group without obligation to “deadline. It is nevertheless a deplorable signal and a terrible failure for neutrality, secularism and living together”, regrets President François De Smet.

DéFI announces that it will fight the revision of these work regulations. “It is still possible to avoid this irremediable breach once morest the neutrality of the State. DéFI invites all defenders of neutrality to wake up and unite.”

“Moreover, what has just happened, with an alternative majority including the PTB, in a context of threats and tensions, is a serious precedent which will have lasting consequences. It is an essential alarm signal which must lead to the constitution of secular majorities in as many Brussels municipalities as possible – this is no longer, it must be noted, the case of the majority which was constituted in Anderlecht this evening.”

“Finally, DéFI condemns in particular the attitude of Ecolo, who played the sorcerer’s apprentice by unnecessarily agitating identity tensions, by disturbing the community’s coexistence and by having created a climate which endangered elected officials. This will leave lasting traces.”
