The rumor mill regarding a PlayStation 5 Pro is bubbling. More and more details are emerging that paint a picture of the possible new console.
Much of the information comes from Tom Henderson, a well-known insider with a good track record of leaks. In the past, he has correctly predicted details regarding the PlayStation 5 Slim, headphones, PlayStation Portal and more.
Henderson’s information suggests the following hardware upgrades:
- Faster and more efficient system memory: Up to 30% more performance
- More RAM: 13,7 GB
- Higher CPU clock speed: Up to 10% more performance
- Powerful GPU: Up to 45% faster graphics performance, up to 4x faster ray tracing, 33.5 teraflops performance
- Optimized audio engine: 35% faster for a better sound experience
- Upscaling-Technologie: PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution Upscaling (PSSR) for 4K at 60 fps and 8K at 30 fps
- AI accelerators and “PlayStation Machine Learning” (PSML): Important for PSSR and future features
- Removable drive: Like the slim version
- 1TB expandable storage
The PlayStation 5 Pro is expected to ship with PlayStation software version 10, which is scheduled for release this fall.
Improved GPU and upscaling technology
The PS5 Pro is said to have a significantly improved GPU that is 45 percent faster than the current PS5. The new GPU integrates 30 Work Group Processors (WGPs) and 60 Compute Units (CUs). Ray tracing performance is doubled or tripled thanks to RDNA 4 hardware. The GPU offers 300 TOPS AI and 33.5 TFLOPs FP32 theoretical performance (versus the PS5’s 10.3 TFLOPs FP32).
Release date and firmware
The PS5 Pro is expected to be released in fall 2024 along with firmware version 10.0.0. Sony recently released the Firmware-Version 9.0.0 released for all PS5 consoles.
PlayStation 5 Pro 2024 with Sony’s own DLSS solution
Giant Bomb reporter and insider Jeff Grubb explains in the current “Game Mess” episode on YouTube that the PlayStation 5 Pro will be released in 2024 with Sony’s own DLSS solution.
“This PS5 Pro leak is almost certainly real based on what I’ve heard now and of course I’m not the only one out there saying this, but I can throw my confirmation into the ring for everyone,” explains Grubbb.
A release in 2024, “probably” in September, also seems pretty certain, according to Grubb. Even if the leaked specifications are not yet official, Sony’s own proprietary AI image enhancement, similar to Nvidia’s DLSS, is said to be the big feature of the PS5 Pro.
“The big thing here, as well as the big feature that this system will support, is Sony’s own proprietary DLSS-like solution where they use their own machine learning to enhance images so they can do things with really high resolution and at a really high frame rate and they would build their own hardware into the PS5 Pro for this purpose. For example, this is where the 2x hardware ray tracing acceleration comes into play, but they would be able to do even more than just better hardware ray tracing. So yeah, that’s probably what’s happening,” Grubb said.
