PL 2630/20, popularly known as “PL das Fake News”, is still being widely debated among parliamentarians following the vote was suspended. This Bill aims to regulate the operation of social platforms in Brazil so that multinational companies commit to combating hate speech and misinformation on the network.
Last Thursday (28), the president of the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel), Carlos Baigorri, once more reiterated the entity’s positioning in acting with PL 2630. According to the executive, the agency has enough capacity to do comply with what is set forth in the text and, with that, regulate the platforms in the national territory.

This speech by the president happened during the Seminar New Regulatory Challenges of the Digital Ecosystem, promoted by the University of Brasília. At the time, Baigorri said that ““When we think of the digital ecosystem, we [da Anatel] we are already in practically all the links of the chain”.
He pointed out that Anatel is already present in the regulation of the passive structure, equipment, network, telecommunications services and value-added service providers. For the executive, the regulation of the articles of PL 2630 would be a complement to the activities currently carried out by the federal autarchy.
The executive’s placement suggests that Anatel can take on the responsibility of overseeing compliance with the guidelines imposed by the Fake News PL if approved. Currently, the Lula government does not have enough votes for the approval of this project, so there is still no prediction of when the text will be on the agenda once more among parliamentarians.
The expectation is that the vote will take place in the coming months, but there is still no date for it to happen. The proposal’s rapporteur, Deputy Orlando Silva will incorporate suggestions presented by deputies to a new opinion.
