One person was fined in almost R$ 8 mil for selling products without approval from the Anatel. The decision was taken by the organization’s Board of Directors last Thursday (26) and ended up being the first time that an individual received a sanction for this type of practice.

Alexandre Freira is a counselor and rapporteur for the matter and commented on the agency’s role in combating piracy:

The results obtained so far have proven to be relevant for Brazilian society, with enforcement that includes both marketplace platforms and individual suppliers. Mediately, these actions translate into better protection for consumer health and safety and improved respect for intellectual property

The decision taken by Anatel was due to the sale of items such as TV Boxes. In this sense, Freire also recalled that the sale of equipment without approval is considered serious. The fine was exactly R$ 7.68 thousand for offering clandestine receivers

The advisor also highlighted the importance of preventing products that encourage the illegal consumption of copyrighted material from circulating. According to him, these items serve as a vector for the unauthorized transmission of content, which tends to harm segments such as sports and cinema.

The rapporteur also said that:

The present case constitutes a referral in line with this understanding, as it seeks to prevent and repress the circulation of products not approved by the Agency.

In recent months, Anatel published figures on its fight against piracy and, in addition, blocked 80% of devices with illegal TV signals.
