Anatel promoted an event on Wednesday (27) in Fortaleza, Ceará, to debate the importance of submarine cables, starting from the analysis of the impact of the construction of a desalination plant in Praia do Futuro.
The table was created in partnership with Telcomp, with names such as advisor Vicente Aquino, the Minister of Communications, Juscelino Filho, parliamentarians and representatives of telecommunications companies.
In the panel, Aquino pointed out that Decree No. 9,573/2018 promulgated the National Critical Infrastructure Security Policy, covering facilities and services whose interruption or damage results in serious impacts in different spheres, and that the guideline defines the security of critical infrastructures as a set of preventive and reactive measures aimed at preserving or reestablishing the provision of services related to them.
The advisor highlighted the strategic importance of telecommunications infrastructure, helping to guarantee national security and stimulate sustainable economic development.
Minister Juscelino Filho stated that submarine optical cables are responsible for 99% of international data traffic and global connectivity. He highlighted that Ceará, especially Fortaleza, is crucial in Brazil’s interconnection with the world, as it houses 17 optical systems with significant aggregate capacity.
Neuri Freitas, CEO of the Ceará Water and Sewage Company, ensured that the distance between cables and other infrastructure was increased to 500 meters, minimizing risks of conflict. For him, the desalination plant might be the solution to water scarcity and the need for peaceful coexistence in the area.
Silvano Porto, manager of research, development and technological innovation at Cagece, also defended the coexistence of the desalination plant with data centers, citing examples from other countries where this coexistence is common.
