On the night of June 23, the 2023 NBA Draft will take place at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, where each of the Great League franchises will try to improve their roster by selecting the right prospects. To best prepare you for this event, which is always eagerly awaited, we thought it useful to focus in particular on the ten teams that will choose in the Top 10, from Dallas to San Antonio. Today we are interested in the Magic, which present themselves this year with pick #6 (among others). What are their options for this Draft?
OPTION #1: CHOOSE THE BEST PLAYER STILL AVAILABLE
The rule is unofficial, but very often known to NBA fans: we do not choose fit in the Top 6, and that the Magic should know. Because in Orlando, we have learned from its mistakes of the past 10 years, the proof with the choice of Paolo Banchero in 2022. The Magic should now select the best possible player who will still be available. According to many forecasts, it will be Ausar Thompson, twin of Amen, who will probably already be gone. But we are never safe from a surprise, the Mickey franchise proved it itself last year, and a member tipped in the Top 5 might well slip to Florida depending on the choice of other GMs. Either way, Orlando should pick the best player available with that sixth pick, and focus instead on making it with the 11th pick, which they got from Chicago in the trade of Nikola Vucevic. For example with a Gradey Dick or a Taylor Hendricks (if still available), which are long-range threats sorely lacking in Orlando and would acclimatize well. Plus, the potential Suggs-Dick duo offers an untold amount of spinoffs and puns.
OPTION #2: MAKE A PACKAGE TO MOUNT THE DRAFT
On the Magic side, there is a very good core of young wolves with long teeth, but we also feel that a little something is missing to really take a step forward despite the recent arrival of Paolo Banchero, who has given color to a moribund attack in recent seasons. However, the American-Italian cannot attack the “Magics” alone and the front office might well try to recover a choice in the Top 3. That of the Spurs being inaccessible, they might try to convince Charlotte or Portland to drop their pick to choose 2 or 3, and thus be able to nab Scoot Henderson, pure dragster in the lead who would run this whole young squad at a frantic pace, or even Brandon Miller, lethal shooter and pure offensive potential despite extra-sporting setbacks. It would probably be necessary to couple at least the sixth and the eleventh choice of the Magic, before perhaps adding another future pick and/or some young assets to obtain a choice in the Top 3. The Magic must test the market and prospect to have a chance to get one of the big talents of this Draft. But “good luck”, clearly.
OPTION #3: MAKE A PACKAGE TO GET AN EXPERIENCED PLAYER
The sixth and eleventh choices available to the Magic for this Draft can be a big asset in the transfer market for a team wishing to rebuild or add a little freshness to the workforce. A player like Jaylen Brown seems unattainable, while a Pascal Siakam would not be of much interest in a team which needs guards and which already has one (two?) position(s) 4 intended for go very far, the Magic can always try their hand on the transfer market, and go directly with a view to “win now”. A slightly more tangible lead would be that of Zach LaVine, formidable scorer and incredible athlete, who might leave the Bulls ready to rebuild from scratch and give the Magic a serious offensive weapon. while sending a nice troll to the Bulls by returning “their” pick. The Magic would then have transformed Nikola Vucevic into Wendell Carter Jr., Franz Wagner and therefore ZLV. Fred VanVleet might also be a target to make him the starting point guard for the Magic and bring this spacing that is so lacking in Florida, the 2019 NBA Champion and 2022 All-Star is in his last year of contract, might either accept his player -option, or arrive via a sign and trade. But the options are many for the Magic, who must once once more test the market to know the real value of their picks.
Orlando has a lot to play for with its sixth pick, but also has the 11th pick in the first round thanks to the Bulls. Not sure they’ll use both, and maybe they won’t even use either to transfer together, but either way, with Rob Hennigan away from here, the Magic will know how to get away with it. profit.
