We spoke to you this followingnoon regarding David Ettedgui’s proposal/projection, which sees William Nylander on the first line of a Canadian who would win the Stanley Cup in 2027. This angle is quite interesting to analyze, but there is a lot more to say regarding the alignment presented by the analyst during his last segment with Tony Marinaro on the Sick Podcast.
This is because at the center of Nylander, on this first unit, we find Kirby Dach. Not Nick Suzuki, who is almost unanimously seen as the Canadiens’ long-term #1 center, but Dach.
Ettedgui mainly uses the size of #77 to justify his position.
He offers Ryan Getzlaf (2007) and Bobby Smith (1989) as examples, ignoring that the last #1 centers to win the Stanley Cup were Jack Eichel, Nathan MacKinnon, Brayden Point and Ryan O’Reilly.
“He is the whole package. You need to have a big guy at center on your first unit. You win the Stanley Cup with big players at center. You need one to win the Cup.”
-David Ettedgui
You would think he would argue that Dach’s offensive ceiling will be higher than Suzuki, but that’s not even the case.
“I’m not saying that Dach will score more points in a season than Suzuki. But he’s your big guy who will give you 60 to 75 points per season, play difficult minutes, be a presence, complement two very talented wingers.

It’s hard to imagine how, in a world where Suzuki is equal to or superior to Dach offensively and moons ahead of him in his own zone, might be the Canadian’s second center, right? During big minutes, it’s a dominant player in both directions of the ice that you want to see on the ice in the most important role… Right?
On the other hand, it is true that Dach is younger and that we have not yet seen his real potential. We can understand why Ettedgui does not give up, in his case.
“He is 21 years old. In two years, we will see the real Kirby Dach. I think he will then be their first center player.”
-David Ettedgui.
Good. We must respect the analyst’s opinion, since we never know what the future holds for us in the world of sport. However, it is legitimate to question:
If Dach isn’t superior to Suzuki offensively, which is Ettedgui’s argument, would he really get the starting center job?
Dach is an excellent passer… But so is Suzuki! He is more than capable of feeding his friend Cole Caufield, we understand.
It’s even… not 2027!
