Analyzing Bruno Genesio’s Record at Stade Rennais: What Went Wrong and What Was Achieved

What can we learn from Bruno Genesio’s record on the Rennes bench? In terms of accounting, he leaves Ille-et-Vilaine with 64 victories, 24 draws and 36 defeats, i.e. a success ratio of 51.61%. After a complicated start, Genesio was able to raise the bar and impose his construction to build a team that has become a contender for Europe, or even for the Ligue 1 podium. However, these last few weeks have been fatal for him.

It all certainly stems from a failed summer recruitment. The arrivals of Enzo Le Fée (23 years old) and Ludovic Blas (25 years old) disappoint, while that of Nemanja Matic, at 35 years old, cannot be enough to compensate for the departures of a captain like Hamari Traoré. Over the months, like his period on the OL bench, Bruno Genesio regularly highlights the “lack of experience” of his team to justify his problems.

Already in March 2023, the Rennes coach recalled this: “One of the pillars of the Stade Rennes project must be the advent of the club’s young players in a professional team. I am not saying that this must be the only pillar of the project, but “It’s one of the very important pillars. Alongside it, there must be a second axis allowing these young people to grow and progress even faster, with the contribution of experienced players.”

His wish will remain in vain. This last season was marked by a lack of overall character in its squad. Players with a warrior mentality have left, replaced by youth who are still too tender and often guilty of obvious errors. As for the defensive sector for example, the oldest player is only 23 years old. A plausible explanation for recurring errors.

Genesio-Cloarec-Maurice, a torn trio

Behind the scenes, relations have also been strained in recent weeks. Arriving in May 2022 at the head of the SRFC without making waves following the withdrawal of the former president of Stade Rennais Nicolas Holveck, Olivier Cloarec asserted himself in his position with certain memorable outings aimed at getting Bruno to react Genesio in sportingly complex periods. “Lamentable”, “scandalous”, the new president does not mince his words.

At his side, technical director Florian Maurice is blamed on several occasions for his disappointing transfer windows, although previously discussed with Bruno Genesio. The departure of the Rennes coach, as well as that of Florian Maurice according to L’Equipe, marks the heartbreak of this striking trio of the club for more than two seasons.

Because, on a sporting level, the former OL coach had always honored his objectives in the Ligue 1 ranking. 6th, 4th, then 4th once more. There remained this additional step to climb to reach a real milestone. Something that Bruno Genesio ultimately did not have the time, or the ability, to do.

Best coach in Ligue 1 with a record season

As soon as he arrived in Rennes, the Breton neo-coach left his mark on his new team. Getting off to a bad start during the 2020-2021 season, the Rennais achieved a superb end to the championship to finally secure a qualifying place in the Europa Conference League, the new European competition set up as C4.

The summer break does not really have the expected effect and Stade Rennes is struggling to restart the machine following very thorough physical preparation by Genesio’s staff. SRFC stagnates in 16th place in Ligue 1, before suddenly taking off. A prestigious victory once morest Paris Saint-Germain (2-0), then cards once morest OL (4-1 then 2-4), Saint-Étienne (0-5), Bordeaux (6-0), Metz (6-1) or even Lorient (5-0). The offensive style of “Pep” is assumed and devilishly well orchestrated. The Breton club will even finish at the foot of the podium and will compete in the Europa League the following season.

Through his sporting results, the Breton coach left his mark on the minds of the supporters by signing a record season in the history of the club: record for points in the championship (66), victories over a season (20), goals scored (82 in Ligue 1 alone), and goal difference (+42). To dedicate this 2021-2022 financial year, Bruno Genesio receives as a bonus the trophy for best coach in Ligue 1 during the UNFP Trophies ceremony and thanks his “talented players” with “essential human values to achieve results at a very high level” .

Praised by Martin Terrier, Benjamin Bourigeaud and Flavien Tait, Bruno Genesio has perfectly managed to integrate the Breton mold and endear himself to both his players and his supporters, even going so far as to humorously evoke his next “Breton passport”. In June 2022, the Team even announced an extension until 2025 for the Rennes coach.

But the idyll ends sooner than expected. Mired in 13th place in the championship following 12 days, with only 2 victories, Stade Rennais finally parted company with a coach who left his mark on the Breton club in just under 3 years. The Reds and Blacks’ bad luck with 5 unsuccessful championship matches got the better of Bruno Genesio, whose voluntary departure was agreed with club owner François Pinault.
