THE ESSENTIAL
- The dengue virus circulates regularly in Martinique, Guadeloupe, Guyana as well as in the French islands of the Pacific and the Indian Ocean.
- In case of dengue fever, aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are not recommended because of the risk of bleeding.
- The treatment of this infectious disease is symptomatic, relieving pain and fever.
28. This is the number of dengue fever cases that have been identified in mainland France, more specifically in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Occitanie regions, since May 1st. According to health authorities, these figures are higher than those recorded in previous years. Recently, the Ministry of Health clarified that “These cases had occurred in people who had not traveled to an area where the virus was circulating in the 15 days preceding the onset of symptoms.”
“In mainland France, the tiger mosquito is present in 67 departments”
In a statementhe also recalled that this infectious disease was transmitted from person to person through the bite of an infected tiger mosquito. “In mainland France, the Aedes albopictus mosquito or tiger mosquito is currently permanently established in 67 departments”, reads the document published on September 14.
Dengue is manifested by headaches, fever and body aches. These symptoms occur within 3 to 14 days of the mosquito bite. These are often benign, but this infectious pathology can be complicated by hemorrhagic forms.
How to avoid contracting dengue fever?
To limit the occurrence of epidemic outbreaks in metropolitan France, the Ministry of Health has once more listed the actions to be taken to prevent the introduction of dengue into the territory.
In order to reduce the development of mosquitoes around your home, any container containing water (buckets, watering cans) should be stored away from the rain, and water supplies should be covered with a mosquito net (drum, container, untreated swimming pool) and to ensure that the gutters run smoothly. To avoid being bitten, it is recommended to wear covering and loose clothing and to apply a cutaneous repellent, in the morning and in the evening, on the uncovered areas of skin.
“Consult your doctor immediately in the presence of suggestive symptoms (high fever of sudden onset, muscle or joint pain, eye pain, fatigue, headache), in particular if a diagnosis of Covid-19 has been ruled out and if they appear within 15 days of returning from a trip to the tropics”, the ministry said.
