‘An unknown team’ emerges in the bid for Rodón’s signature

A report has surfaced that the Yankees are preparing an offer for Rodón, who is speculated to be seeking a seven-year contract. Earlier in the week, MLB.com’s Jon Paul Morosi pointed out that the Dodgers and Red Sox are the top suitors.

The Cardinals are also thought to be involved as the unknown team, while some have said the Twins and Orioles are two other squads targeting the starter.

The kind of contract Rodón is seeking — specifically the years he prefers — might be an obstacle to the Giants retaining him. Alternatively, San Francisco might turn its attention to Chris Barritt. The Giants “apparently are interested” in the veteran, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. The club has also contacted left-hander Sean Manaea.

Furthermore, each of those outfits and others might be seeking the services of Nathan Eovaldi; his 7.6 fWAR over the past two seasons ranks below only Rodon among free-agent starters still on the market. It was reported ahead of the Winter Meetings that interest in Eovaldi “continued to grow,” but there has been no indication of which teams want to sign the right-hander.
