An “unexpected reason” for hair loss that you may notice in the spring

England – A leading hair expert has warned that the seasonal cold (spring allergies) may be the reason behind hair loss in men and women.

Dr. Baloy, an expert in hair health, says that it is all due to our immune systems and their reactions to seasonal allergies (or so-called “hay fever”), which cause symptoms that include: sneezing, coughing, and stuffy nose.

He explained: “As the weather warms, many of us are looking forward to spending more time outside. “While the symptoms of hay fever are well-documented, there is a lesser-known symptom that may affect you: increased hair loss.”

Hay fever usually occurs between late March and September, as a result of an “overreaction” of our immune systems to pollen, mold spores and other similar allergens.

When this happens, the immune system releases histamine, which acts as part of the body’s defense to get rid of pollen in any way possible, prompting coughing, sneezing, or tears.

Baloy continued: “This leads to inflammation in the nasal tract and sinuses, which may lead to hair loss. When your immune system is healthy, inflammation protects your body from further damage. “However, when your immune system is affected by hay fever, it can respond to scalp inflammation by attacking hair follicles, leading to hair loss.”

Itching and rubbing your scalp can also make this worse, causing irritation of hair follicles and increased hair loss over time.

“Inflammation can cause stress, which is the main cause of hair loss,” Baloy added.

Although hay fever is not curable, Baloy emphasizes that there are some easy ways to deal with the hair loss it causes. This includes managing other symptoms by taking antihistamines, nasal sprays or hay fever injections, to relieve inflammation and reduce the allergic response.

“Follow good hair care habits, such as using gentle shampoo and avoiding excessive heat styling,” Baloy said. “Eating healthy foods and vitamins can also support overall hair health.”
