An unboxing and Geekbench test of a supposed MacBook Pro M4 – MacGeneration

A video shows the unboxing of what is presented as one of the next M4 MacBook Pros, with some information on the possible new features.

The only curious thing is the reuse of the illustration for the packaging even though it is a new generation. Image: Wylsacom.

For several days, a photo of box of MacBook Pro M4 — with the illustration identical to that of the M3 — was circulating, as was a rumor about copies being sold secretly in a Facebook group. A little less than a month before the supposed launch date of the next Macs, a Russian YouTuber shows unboxing of what would be a copy of the 14″ MacBook Pro M4 (via Mark Gurman).

If this machine is what it claims to be, there are a few new features. On the edge with the HDMI port as well as the SD card reader, a (third) Thunderbolt 4 port is now present, in addition to the two that we already have on the other edge of the MacBook Pro M3.

The memory configuration of this unit is 16 GB for 512 GB SSD. If this is the replacement for the entry-level M3 model then it is 8 GB more RAM and this removes one of the criticisms made of this machine.

Output

Release of Apple Intelligence on October 28 and arrival of the first M4 Macs on November 1?

On the tested performances, first the configuration shows an M4 with a CPU and a GPU of 10 cores each while the CPU of the M3 only has 8. This is in line with the M4 of the latest iPad Pros in their 1 and 2 TB configurations. Compared to the current M3, the power gain of the M4 shown with Geekbench is 23.85 for the CPU and 27.1% for the GPU.

Finally, the Space Black color which was reserved for the M3 Pro/Max models would be offered for the base M4.
