An Post raises Stamp Price Amid Declining Letter Volumes

Facing rising operating costs and a significant decline in letter volumes, An Post announced a 25-cent increase in the price of a standard stamp, effective February 27th for personal customers and March 1st for business users. The new price of €1.65 reflects a global trend, with An Post emphasizing that it remains lower than the benchmark price in the UK (€1.88 for next-day service) and many other European Union countries.

Declining Letter Volumes Fuel Price Hike

An Post attributed the price increase directly to a substantial drop in letter volumes. Over the past year alone, letter volumes have decreased by 8%,marking a 40% decline since 2017. This trend extends further, with a dramatic 50% drop observed over the past decade. Notably, 93% of letters are currently generated by businesses or government bodies, leaving only 7% for personal correspondence.

International Postage Rates Also Increase

The price adjustments extend beyond domestic postage.International stamp prices are also increasing, rising from €2.20 to €2.65. Rates for larger envelopes, packets, and parcels sent internationally will also see adjustments. Digital stamp prices will increase by 22 cents, reaching €2.22.

Continued Support for Key Sectors

Despite the price adjustments, An Post remains committed to supporting specific sectors. Nursing homes and care facilities will continue to receive free postal services for the remainder of 2025. Stamp discounts are also maintained for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).

An Post Announces Stamp Price increase

An Post, Ireland’s national postal service, announced a 25 cent increase in the price of a standard stamp, effective February 27th for personal customers and March 1st for business users. This adjustment marks the first price change in three years and comes in response to a declining volume of letter mail and the need to ensure the financial sustainability of the service.

Navigating a Changing Landscape

An Post CEO David McRedmond explained the rationale behind the increase, stating, “It’s been a challenging surround for postal services globally, and we’ve been meticulously analyzing our financial position to ensure long-term sustainability.” He emphasized the significant decline in letter volumes, which have decreased by 8% in the past year, 40% since 2017, and a staggering 50% over the past decade.

A Focus on Growth areas

Despite the challenges posed by the digital age, An Post remains committed to providing affordable and reliable postal services. McRedmond highlighted the strategic shift towards growth areas, such as parcel delivery and eCommerce, which are experiencing rapid expansion. “We’ve worked hard to streamline our operations, reduce costs, and implement smarter work practices,” he said. “Our ambition is to remain competitive and affordable while investing in the growth areas like parcel delivery and eCommerce, which are experiencing rapid expansion.”

Maintaining Customer Value

“We’ve worked hard to get the economics right on price for postage by introducing smarter work practices and reducing costs to keep our prices below the European benchmark average, and below the UK,” McRedmond stated. He further emphasized the company’s financial independence, noting, “An Post remains entirely self-financed (having repaid a Government loan in full in 2024).”

Existing Stamps Remain Valid

It’s significant to note that existing stamps marked with ‘N’ (national) and ‘W’ (worldwide) or specific euro denominations remain valid for use after February 27th.
