The exhibition “Duchy timepieces in Tukuma” is dedicated to the three most culturally and historically significant objects in the center of Tukuma: the residence of the archbishop in the walled castle of Tukuma, St. For the Trinity Tukuma Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Old Pharmacy building built in 1758, where the duke’s surgeon Johan Gottlob Groške worked. Of all these buildings, only the church still fulfills its original function. Only the tower of the Tukuma Castle, which now houses the museum dedicated to the history of the city, has survived from the rebuilt stone castle. The old apothecary house has lost its former glory, but it has become the most popular art space in the city, as it houses the “Durvis” Art Gallery.
Still in the exhibition until April 30 particularly valuable artefacts from the collections of the Tukuma Museum, Rundāle Palace and Bauska Palace are on display. The biggest exhibit of the exhibition is the clock mechanism of the Tukuma church, which has never been seen up close before, as it is usually kept in the storage of the Rundāle Palace museum. The most valuable objects of the exhibition – a table made by a 17th-century craftsman and a Mannerist style chandelier, and an 18th-century tin Christmas bowl – describe the interior of the church as it was before the major reconstructions almost 200 years ago. On the other hand, the restored 18th century furniture, including the secretary, invites you to imagine the atmosphere of the Old Pharmacy, where one of the most influential families of Tukums led the daily life.
Celebrating the 770th anniversary of Tukums, the museum has also exhibited a copy of the Kursa Treaty of 1253, which is usually kept in the Latvian State History Archive of the National Archives of Latvia. The author of the transcripts and several watercolors shown in the exhibition is the excellent ethnographer and archivist Johan Christoph Broce.
The Tukuma Museum apologizes to its visitors for being forced to close the exhibition earlier than planned. Unfortunately, the tile roofing, which was installed in 1990, is in such bad condition that it also affects the building itself. The clay tiles are delaminated, broken, as a result of which moisture accumulates under the roofing. It has damaged wooden structures. The municipality of Tukuma region has allocated funding. The works will be carried out by SIA “Pretpils”, which has experience in carrying out construction works in Firkspedvāle and Dundaga Castle. Construction supervision will be carried out by A/S “Būvuzniemums Restaurators”, author supervision – SIA “Arhitektes I. Caunītes birojs”.
It is planned to restore the roofing and roof structures, preserving the historical substances, and to ensure the regulatory bearing capacity of the roof structures. During the works, the upper parts of the facades will be rehabilitated – the eaves and the eroded sections will be restored – and the roof covering will be laid with clay tiles.
The working hours of the Tukuma Castle tower in the summer season, from April 20 to October 20, are as follows: from Tuesday to Saturday from 10.00 to 17.00, on Sundays from 11.00 a.m. to 16.00
