An Italian surfer dies after being attacked by a needlefish in Indonesia

Italian surfer Giulia Manfrini, very popular on social media, died on Friday after being attacked by a needlefish while surfing in Indonesia.

Manfrini, 36, was in the waters off the island of Pulau Masokut, near Sumatra, when a needlefish stuck in his chest and left a 5cm wound.

Local Indonesian media reported the accident this Saturday thanks to the testimony of Lahmudin Siregar, acting head of the Mentawai Islands Regional Disaster Management Agency.

According to the reconstruction, the Italian was able to ask two men for help and was rushed to the nearest medical center, where she was treated without success.

Manfredi, who has more than 22,000 followers on Instagram, where she showed her travels and surfing photos, graduated in Law from the University of Turin and has always been in contact with sport, and, although she started with skiing and snowboarding, , expanded his horizons with surfing, which focused the last years of his life.

He had also founded a travel agency and thanks to social networks he became an especially popular figure within the Italian surfing community.
