An Israeli attack on Rafah ‘would lead to a bloodbath’

A ground attack by the Israeli army on the town of Rafah, in the southern part of the Gaza Strip, “could lead to a bloodbath”, the head of the World Health Organization warned today in a message on the X social media.

“WHO is deeply concerned that a large-scale military operation in Rafah, Gaza, could lead to a bloodbath and further weaken a health system already on its knees,” writes Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, of the city in which 1.2 million Palestinians have gathered seeking refuge there.

Currently, the Israeli military continues to shell the city, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to launch a ground offensive to “exterminate” as he says the last brigades of Hamas, a movement considered a terrorist organization by Israel, the United States and the European Union. Join.

The Europeans, the UN and the United States, Israel’s main ally, have all strongly urged Netanyahu not to proceed with a ground assault on the city.

Apart from the cost in human lives, an attack would be a “severe blow to humanitarian operations across the Gaza Strip” as Rafah “is at the center of humanitarian operations”, a spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs warned today. (OCHA) Jens Larke, in Geneva.

On October 7, an attack by Hamas militants who entered southern Israel from Gaza killed more than 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

In retaliation for the Hamas attack, the Israeli military launched a wide-scale offensive – air and then ground – on the Gaza Strip, which has so far killed 34,622 people, mostly civilians, according to Hamas’ health ministry.
