France has 17 million hypertensives according to Santé Publique France, including 6 million who are unaware of it. Alain Ducardonnet, doctor and health consultant for BFMTV, explains when and how to take your blood pressure to monitor your health.
“The principle of taking blood pressure is to manage to perceive the artery which is at the bend of the elbow and you must have your arm bare”, begins the specialist on BFMTV.
Once the cuff is installed, “you inflate, to compress the artery until the blood no longer passes and gradually you will deflate, the blood will pass” and a first number will be given by the tensiometer. When the blood passes once more “normally, there will be another number” and it is these data that are “important for assessing blood pressure”.
The doctor recommends taking your blood pressure, in the morning or in the evening before going to bed, three times in a row: “The first time the blood pressure will be higher, we are a little moved, the third time will be the most faithful because we will be familiar with taking measurements”.
The threshold to watch
To really know its level of tension, the measurements must be regular, “an isolated measurement has no value”, underlines Alain Ducardonnet.
“It is the average of the daily measurements over a month that will tell if you are above ’14/9′, which are the classic reference points for blood pressure. There, we can say that you are hypertensive “.
“It is not because one time we have 18 of tension that we must treat”, however if the tension remains high for too long it is necessary to act by turning to “the regular practice of a physical activity, by decreasing its consumption of salt and alcohol or even by losing a little weight”, he advises, recalling that drug treatments also exist.
