These sweets are growing in popularity among young French people, in 2022, they are nearly 7,000 tons of Japanese sweets that have been imported. The survey shows that “many Japanese sweets exported to France contain opaque ingredientsproblematic, or even outright prohibited and dangerous. The potentially toxic composition of certain Japanese candies massively imported into France, often highlighted by Japanese influencers, was highlighted by Mr Mondialisation. The journalists of this independent media therefore decided to conduct theirown investigation to better understand the ingredients in question. here are the findings of their investigation.

Journalists analyzed the composition ofa dozen of the most popular products. It was found that 40% of the sample had health problems. The investigation focused particularly on the problematic composition of Mars Japan Limited’s M&M’s, Meisan’s Pachi Pachi Panic Crackling Powders and Sonomanma Raisin Fusen Gums. These products contain ingredients that the brand does not provide precision, calling them “fuzzy” (source 1).

Ingredients without precise indications

Several packaging stipulate ingredients, without providing information on their origin or essence. The survey carried out demonstrates at least 3 of them:

A “plant” oil without specifying the species and origin, which might be palm oil or other. A “coating agent” or “brightener” to give a shiny and uniform appearance to sweets, without specifying its nature. The survey stresses that it is important to note that not all optical brighteners are allowed in food products according to the regulations of each country. A “food pH regulator” without any specification.

In addition to the opacity of the ingredients, the investigation denounces the presence of dyes banned by the European Union. For example, the titanium dioxide E171 forbidden in foodstuffs in France since January 1, 2020following an opinion from the ANSES National Food Safety Agency in April 2019 highlighting its dangerousness for the health of consumers due to its nanoparticle form. The investigation also identified the presence of gardenia yellow in some Japanese sweetsa colorant which is not authorized in the European Union due to its notable allergenic components.

Imported confectionery is subject to a enhanced monitoring by the DGCCRF (Direction Générale de la Concurrence, Consumption et de la Repression des Frauds), which sanctions violations of consumer law.
