Only two of them are alive and being treated at a wildlife shelter, while at least three others were euthanized due to their serious injuries, state conservation regulators said.

Regulators said the marsupials, a member of the “giant kangaroo” species that is most widespread in southern and eastern Australia, died from gunfire and “trauma consistent with a vehicle collision”.

Spent shotgun shells were found in the area.

The Australian government protects kangaroos, but the most widespread species is not in danger of extinction. This means they can be hunted in most territories with authorization.

The population of kangaroos fluctuates between 30 and 60 million nationwide, and kangaroos are often culled in an effort to control their numbers.

The kangaroo is an Australian icon and poses a major environmental problem for the vast country due to its jagged reproductive cycle: following the rainy season, when feed is plentiful, the kangaroo population can number in the tens of millions. But when food is depleted, large-scale slaughter also causes them to die in large numbers.

Every year, up to five million kangaroos are slaughtered for their meat or skin.
