Denis Richard, professor at Laval University and researcher at the Research Center of the University Institute of Cardiology and Pneumology of Quebec-Université Laval (IUCPQ), passed away on December 9.

Professor Richard has taught at the Faculty of Medicine since 1984. An expert in the regulation of energy balance, he has authored more than 300 scientific articles on the mechanisms involved in the control of food intake and energy expenditure, determining factors of ‘obesity. He is also considered a pioneer in research into the neurobiology of obesity in Canada.

His career has been punctuated with awards. Among these, let us mention, in 2016, the Armand-Frappier prize, the highest distinction awarded by the government of Quebec in science and technology. In 2017, he was admitted to the Acamédie des Grand Québécois. In 2019, he won the Jonas Salk Prize awarded to a scientist who has made a remarkable scientific contribution to research into a serious physical illness.

From 1999 to 2022, he was director of the IUCPQ Research Center. Under his leadership, the center adopted the mission to “discover, prevent and cure through the creation, transmission and use of knowledge for the benefit of the population and people suffering from cardiovascular, respiratory and health-related diseases. obesity”.

During his time as director of the center, the size of the premises, the number of researchers, student researchers and staff, the total annual research funds and the number of publications per year more than tripled.
