Austria had never won a European Championship medal in cyclocross (cross-country cycling races) before, but in Pontevedra (Spain) a 17-year-old from Innviertel had his moment. Valentin Hofer, number one in the junior world rankings, secured silver in the U19 category behind Italian Mattia Agostinacchio.
“It was an almost perfect race, I had really great legs,” said a happy Hofer, who showed great self-confidence: “From lap two or three I knew that I could win a medal.”

**Interview with Valentin Hofer: Austria’s Rising Cyclocross Star**
**Editor:** Valentin, congratulations on your remarkable achievement at the European Championship! Securing a silver medal in the U19 category is no small feat. How does it feel to make history for Austria in cyclocross?
**Valentin Hofer:** Thank you so much! It feels absolutely amazing. Being the first Austrian to win a European Championship medal in cyclocross is a huge honor, and I’m really proud of what I accomplished.
**Editor:** You mentioned in your post-race comments that you had “really great legs” during the race. Can you elaborate on what went into preparing for this event?
**Valentin Hofer:** Absolutely! Leading up to the championship, I focused a lot on my endurance training, technique, and mental preparation. I also had a supportive team and coach who helped me to refine my skills and stay motivated. I felt strong during the race, and that confidence helped me push through.
**Editor:** You were ranked number one in the junior world rankings heading into the event. Did that added pressure affect your performance at all?
**Valentin Hofer:** Initially, I felt a bit of pressure, but I tried to use it to my advantage. I reminded myself that I’ve worked hard to get here. By the second lap, I focused on my own race and not on what others were doing, which really helped me perform my best.
**Editor:** It sounds like a smart approach. Can you share a bit about your experience on the course in Pontevedra? What were some of the challenges you faced?
**Valentin Hofer:** The course was challenging but exciting. There were technical sections that required precision and tactical decisions. I faced some tough moments, especially with my competitors pushing hard. But I trusted my training, and that made a significant difference.
**Editor:** You’re currently riding for Cannibal - Victorious U19 Development Team. How has the support from your team contributed to your success?
**Valentin Hofer:** My team has been incredibly supportive. They provide not just training but also a great environment to grow as a cyclist. We share knowledge and experiences that help us all improve. It’s like a big family, and it really motivates me to achieve my goals.
**Editor:** What’s next for you after this successful championship? Any upcoming competitions or goals you’re working towards?
**Valentin Hofer:** I’m looking forward to the rest of the season, and I’ll be competing in several more races. I aim to keep improving my skills and hopefully contend for more medals. My ultimate goal is to make it to the World Championships and perform well there.
**Editor:** Well, we’re all cheering for you, Valentin. Thank you for sharing your insights with us, and congratulations once again on your historic achievement!
**Valentin Hofer:** Thank you! I appreciate the support!
