The fire started around 7.20 p.m. in the former Bavarian hospital, located on boulevard de la Constitution in the center of Liège. The firefighters were able to intervene very quickly, their barracks being located less than 200 meters from the fire.
On site, flames of several meters were visible from the roof of the left wing of the hospital.
According to the Liège police zone, the fire was under control around 8:20 p.m. on Sunday. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
As a precaution, and to facilitate the work of the firefighters, rue des Bonnes Villes and the section of boulevard de la Constitution are closed to traffic.
The former Bavarian hospital, whose facade is listed, had been abandoned for several years, but continued to be occupied by squatters. Another fire had already ravaged the right wing of the old hospital in 2017.
