An eye in Flanders: another pollution scandal breaks out in the north of the country

Every week, journalist Joyce Azar comes to talk regarding the events that have marked Flanders during the past week. This Sunday, three news on the program: a new pollution scandal, an initiative for people with dementia and a focus on the hobby horsing, a popular sport in the north of the country.

We start with the new pollution case: an investigation carried out by the Pano program of the VRT revealed that a landfill located in Kruibeke was responsible for the discharge of several toxic substances into the Scheldt.

After the PFOS pollution scandal, caused by the 3M chemical plant in Zwijndrechtthis week it was discovered that the waste water discharged by the Kruibeke landfill contained an excessive level of toxic substances, including in particular uranium, nickel and even cobalt.

What is even more striking in this affair is that the landfill in question is operated by a public agency, the Vlaamse Waterweg, which itself is under the supervision of the Flemish Minister for Mobility, Lydia Peeters (Open Vld ).

In Pano’s investigation, called “Flanders pollutes” and of which we offer you a short report, we see that the landfill concerned is located between Kruibeke and Zwijndrecht. In the waste water that was discharged into the Scheldt, there are up to five times more uranium than allowed, and up to eleven times more cobalt. For the inhabitants interviewed, it is a shock.
