An evening spent with your head in the stars

If the “curious followingworks” offered at Calm, at the Faculty of Sciences of Limoges, are all as exciting as each other, the last took the room or rather the heads… “into the stars”.

Indeed, the fascinating world of stars and space was the subject of this very instructive evening. At the helm, François Reynaud and Sylvain Valat captivated the large assembly.

François Reynaud began the conference by presenting his career until today, where he is a research professor at the University of Limoges, attached to the Xlim laboratory.

Communication between students of Couzeix and Thomas Pesquet

Then, he presented his work around spatial imaging allowing to see celestial bodies emitting infrared and to observe small objects with giant instruments.

Sylvain Valat, computer operations referent and leading member of the amateur radio network, shared his feedback from the Ariss France project (radio amateurs making contact between a school and an astronaut on board the International Space Station , ISS).

This operation was carried out with the Maurice-Genevoix de Couzeix college, where the students were able to communicate with Thomas Pesquet.

During this evening, the public was able to see excerpts from the students’ questions and the astronaut’s answers during their radio contact.

Finally, the evening ended with judicious questions from the participants to the two speakers of the day before the assembly answered a quiz which focused on space, optics and radio as well as on the interventions of Francois Reynaud and Sylvain Valat.
