On Sunday, Sheba Medical Center revealed the first reported case in Israel of carditis associated with infection with the Omicron mutant of the Corona virus, according to a report by the website.Times of IsraelThe World Health Organization has not commented on it yet.
Doctors at the center told Channel 12 that a 43-year-old man was transferred to special care for the Corona virus, and is currently being treated for myocarditis.
Professor Shlomi Matitsky, an expert in cardiology at the hospital, expressed his concern that it was the first case diagnosed with mutated carditis.
He emphasized that the patient’s health condition was closely monitored.
Previous mutations of the virus had caused myocarditis and pericarditis (inflammation of the lining surrounding the heart).
The center indicated that the patient received a booster dose of the coronavirus vaccine last August, and was in good health.
Israel is seeing a huge rise in infections caused by Omicron, with the number of COVID-19 patients listed as in critical condition rising to 206, according to Health Ministry figures released Sunday.
Officials said Israel is dealing with both the fast-spreading Omicron and the more dangerous Delta strains of the virus, expressing concerns that the health system might be overwhelmed as flu cases soar, which is also absorbing hospitals.
And the Ministry of Health figures showed, on Sunday, that out of 9.5 million residents of Israel, 6621321 received at least one dose of the vaccine, and among them, 5963,196 received a second dose and 4322783 received a third booster dose.
Last week, Israel began distributing additional fourth boosters to its elderly residents and health workers.
