Mercedes-Benz has presented an electric version of its G-Wagen SUV. Let’s see how the iconic car has changed and whether the new product will replace the gasoline and diesel engine versions.

The new G 580 EQ is slightly different from its predecessors: only the hood and grille structure have changed slightly, while the overall layout remains unchanged.

“Electrogelic” team four individually controlled electric motors – they are integrated directly into the chassis and develop a maximum power of 432 kW with 1,164 Nm of torque. The charge of the lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 116 kW/h is enough for 473 kilometers (in mixed mode), and the low center of gravity, protected from water and dirt, as well as G-TURN and G-STEERING technologies will allow the new product to move confidently over rough terrain.

It is worth noting that especially for the G 580 EQ, the company has developed G-ROAR technology, which imitates the sounds of classic engines. Mercedes also equipped the electric car with a 12.3-inch central display with touch controls, as well as a “transparent hood” function that improves visibility using cameras – this solution will certainly appeal to driving enthusiasts All Terrain.

However, the electric G-Wagen’s top speed is limited to 180 km/h, which is an order of magnitude lower than its conventional counterparts. In comparison, the G 63 equipped with a V8 engine might reach 210 km/h, and the G65 equipped with a V12 an impressive speed of 230 km/h for this category.

It will be interesting to see how the G 580 EQ and its later variants perform in real-world use. Still, it’s hardly worth expecting the same durability from new products that classic G-Wagen models show.
