The death of a 10-year-old child, killed by bullets from a weapon of war, on Monday August 21 while his uncle’s vehicle was traveling in the Pissevin district, in Nîmes, is the most tragic episode of wars that drug networks have been waging for several years. And the court cases are piling up.

Eight men, most of them criminals from Nîmes with a long criminal record, will thus be tried at the end of the year by the Marseille criminal court for a plan for a double assassination and for three shootings, at the beginning of 2020, committed in this sensitive district, one of the most important points of sale of narcotics in the city of Gard. At the time, images similar to those of Monday evening had circulated on social networks: vehicles arriving near “the slab” overlooking the Wagner shopping mall, hooded men in black running and shooting almost at the blind.

In her order for referral to court, signed on July 12, the investigating judge of the specialized interregional jurisdiction of Marseille summarizes the statements of witnesses and victims. Everyone talks regarding “scenes of civil war with several individuals carrying long weapons, walking in the middle of passers-by and open and busy businesses, shooting in all directions”. Explaining that they were used to it, the neighborhood being accustomed to such shootings, the traders had the same reflex to lower their metal curtains to protect their customers.

On January 12, 2020 shortly before 11 p.m. and on January 26 just following 8 p.m., the shootings had not caused any casualties. An employee of a cafe whose window had suffered seventeen shots had been left with a great fright, just like a man who had taken refuge in his vehicle but whose untimely flashing had alerted the shooters. “There’s someone in there”, had launched an assailant trying to open the door before immediately turning back by firing two shots. On the spot, more than forty cases of ammunition had been identified on January 26.

Territorial struggle

On the other hand, on February 10, during a third shooting, three men were injured this time: a buyer was shot in the arm while he was consuming, near the media library, what he had just acquired. Knowing the scene, he told the police, he was wearing a bulletproof vest. Two residents who had gone out to buy a sandwich were hit by a projectile, one in the abdomen, the other in the shoulder.
