Faced with sharply rising electricity prices, tenants of an HLM located in Lyon are encouraged to take the stairs rather than the elevator.

The Rhône HLM office is in a delicate situation since electricity prices have increased by 150% in recent months for this lessor.

This office manages 26,000 housing units. To combat the devastating effects of rising electricity prices, an energy sobriety plan has been launched. Thus, the office has calculated that each lift trip costs 10 euro cents.

To avoid these expenses, tenants are therefore encouraged to use the stairs, except in case of necessity. One of the residents doubts the validity of this measure. Haifa says: “It’s minimal compared to the savings we’ll be able to make, knowing that there are people who can’t take the stairs.

Reduced lighting

The consequences of rising energy prices do not only affect lift. Indeed, the HLM du Rhône office has decided to reduce the lighting in the common areas. A measure that is acclaimed by a tenant. “I actually think that at midnight, at night, we don’t necessarily need the parking lot to be lit (…) if it might even be done nationally, that would be not bad“, argues the inhabitant. Half of the light bulbs will be removed and the duration of the timers will drop from three to one minute.

The overall objective for the lessor is to reduce consumption by 20%. To achieve such a result, the public authorities are also called upon since the Opac du Rhône hopes to see the price shield be applied to social housing.
