Cairo – An emergency meeting was launched at the headquarters of the Arab League in Cairo on Wednesday, at the level of permanent delegates, to discuss developments in the Gaza Strip, amid Palestinian warnings of the repercussions of a possible Israeli invasion of the city of Rafah, adjacent to the Egyptian border.
This was reported by Egyptian media, coinciding with the continuation of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip since last October 7.
The work of the extraordinary session began at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League, on Wednesday, under the chairmanship of Hussein Sidi Abdullah Al-Di, Mauritania’s ambassador to Egypt and its permanent representative to the Arab League, the current president of the League Council, and in the presence of Assistant Secretary-General Hossam Zaki, and delegates and representatives of Arab countries, according to what the private Al-Masry Al-Youm newspaper reported. .
In his speech before the meeting, Palestine’s representative to the Arab League, Muhannad Al-Aklouk, said: “We warn Israel against launching a military operation in Palestinian Rafah and its repercussions on more than a million displaced people,” according to what the private Cairo News Channel reported.
He stressed that “Israel refused to obey international law and did not stop the fire in Gaza during the month of Ramadan,” continuing: “We call on the Security Council to take a decision that forces Israel to cease fire in the Gaza Strip and impose sanctions on the occupation.”
On March 15, the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced, in a statement, that the latter “approved plans for a military operation in Rafah, and the army is preparing to evacuate the population,” without specifying a time frame for the start of the military operation in Rafah. City.
The meeting, which is being held at the request of Palestine and the support of the Arab countries, will discuss “Arab and international action to stop the crime of genocide and the policy of starvation and displacement committed by Israel against the Palestinian people,” according to a previous Arab League statement.
The meeting will also discuss “Arab and international action in light of the ongoing Israeli threats of an imminent invasion of the city of Rafah, which houses more than 1.5 million displaced people and Palestinian citizens, and Israel’s intransigence and refusal to implement Security Council resolutions related to the ceasefire and the entry of humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip.”
Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been waging a war on Gaza that has left tens of thousands of civilian casualties, most of them children and women, and massive destruction and famine that has claimed the lives of dozens of children, according to Palestinian and UN data.
Israel continues this war despite the issuance of a UN Security Council resolution demanding a ceasefire during the month of Ramadan, and also despite its first appearance before the International Court of Justice on charges of committing “genocide.”
