While 72% of girls get their periods before the age of 13 and menstruation impacts the education of half of the students, this issue is rarely addressed at school. The Règles Élémentaires association campaigns for better information.

« In middle and high school, many students tell us that they don’t dare talk regarding their periods at school. Neither to their classmates, nor to their teachers, nor to the medical staff of the establishment », deplores the Règles Élémentaires association. “ Lack of knowledge, misinformation, menstrual insecurity, pain, stress and humiliation affect the physical and mental health of students. »

Thus, for 8 out of 10 girls, having their period at school is a stress factor; 1 in 3 girls have already missed school because of their period and 1 in 4 consider that this absenteeism has slowed down their academic progress.

Better information

If more than 7 out of 10 students get their periods before the age of 13, only half have received information at school. “However, three quarters of those who were able to benefit from it are unanimous: having information on periods allowed them to better understand their body, a key step for equality, and support the entry into puberty », insists the association. Which recalls that menstrual education would make it possible to “ live your periods well at any age and whatever your experience, prevent the risks of menstrual insecurity, put an end to taboos and discrimination linked to periods… ».

Règles Élémentaires therefore proposes to organize workshops in schools, dedicated awareness-raising times, to provide information, deconstruct preconceived ideas, question taboos, all in a mixed environment because everyone is concerned. .
