The Tactical Intervention Group (GTI) was deployed for an intervention in an apartment in the Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough, when a man armed with a firearm allegedly kidnapped a woman on Wednesday afternoon.

The Montreal Police Service (SPVM) was called to Avenue Carignan, near Rue de Marseille, around 2:45 p.m. A large security perimeter was immediately delimited to ensure the safety of the population.

Several units have been deployed, including the GTI and the Specialized Support and Intervention group, said SPVM spokesperson Véronique Dubuc.

The information obtained by the SPVM, however, turned out to be “partially founded”, she said. The spokeswoman said that this explains why the police have still not made an arrest, even though the perimeter was lifted around 6:30 p.m.

“There are still a lot of steps to be taken, mentioned Véronique Dubuc. Investigators are continuing their investigation to meet with all parties involved to find out whether or not they will press charges.”
