Buenos Aires – Judicial documents published late Thursday evening revealed that a new ruling issued by the highest criminal court in Argentina held Iran responsible for an attack on the headquarters of the Joint Argentine Jewish Association in 1994 in the capital, Buenos Aires, which resulted in deaths.
The ruling stated that the attack was a “crime once morest humanity,” in a decision that paves the way for relatives of the dead to file other lawsuits.
The judges’ decision stated that the bombing of the headquarters of the Joint Argentine-Israeli Association was carried out by Hezbollah fighters according to a “political and strategic plan” drawn up by Iran. The bombing, which killed 85 people and injured hundreds, is the deadliest of its kind in the country’s history.
Representatives of the Jewish community in Argentina said that the court’s decision is “historic” and opens the door for relatives of the victims to file lawsuits once morest the Islamic Republic.
Speaking to reporters on Friday in Buenos Aires, Amos Lenitsky, president of the Joint Argentine-Israeli Association, called the decision “wonderful news,” but said the length of time to achieve justice was “pitiable.”
The Argentine judiciary has always confirmed that Iran was involved in the attack, but joint investigations and arrest warrants issued by the International Police (Interpol) have yielded nothing. Tehran denied involvement and refused to hand over suspects.
Prosecutors accused senior Iranian officials and members of the Iranian-backed Lebanese Hezbollah group of ordering the bombing, and also of their involvement in an attack on the Israeli embassy in Argentina that killed 22 people in 1992.
