The development of the quad trail network, carried out by the Fédération québécoise des clubs quads with its member clubs and their volunteers, has ensured that today, we can travel long distances, experience quad vacations and more.
To help quad riders and provide them with safety and peace of mind when traveling, Federation officials created the iQuad application, which has now become iQuad Pro.
“You should know that throughout the world, Quebec is considered the place where there is the largest network of federated quad trails,” explains the geomatician of the Federation for 10 years, Patrick Dubois. If we add up the summer trails, the winter trails and the four-season trails, we arrive at a network of nearly 33,000 kilometers. It’s huge, almost as big as the road network of the Quebec Ministry of Transport.
“The big difference is that our network is entirely supported by volunteers. All these details that I mention to you demonstrate the importance of the quad world in Quebec. »
BIRTH OF iQUAD
Thus becoming a very large machine, the network of trails might become, for some quad riders, a real headache to find their way around.
“This is how the iQuad application was born, in 2012, which allowed us to offer a tool to quad riders to help them practice their activity.
“As the world of cellular telephony evolved, it became difficult to obtain the full performance of our application. We therefore worked to create a new interface that would meet people’s needs and above all be able to adapt to the new cellular reality. This is how the new version of iQuad and the iQuad Pro were born.
“We had to be able to create a program that would meet today’s standards and those of the future, particularly when cell phones will be able to obtain a satellite connection. »
NEW FEATURES
The Pro version of the application brings with it very interesting new features.
“This new version 4.0 made it possible to add context menus that can slide from top to bottom and from right to left, but at its core, it remains an iQuad. The old version still works but differently from the Pro version.
“So, with the iQuad Pro, you can record and save the routes in the application, unlike before where the route was no longer available once the hike was finished. Now we can plan our movements.
“We can also use a third-party application like Track Map, make our routes and import them, always with the iQuad Pro version. Also, we can share our routes with another quad rider. Once the hike is finished, we can export all the details of our hike to the cell phone and then send it by SMS or email to a friend. »
Thanks to the iQuad Pro application, it is also possible to form groups when you are traveling in groups.
“The group leader sends an invitation to all the quad riders in the group. They just have to accept the invitation to automatically become members, always on the condition that they all have iQuad Pro. At this time, we see information bubbles appear which, for example, will tell us where the quad riders in the group have reached. If someone is late, we can find out and wait for them.
“When there is a mechanical or other problem, the person can send a message to the other members of the group. It becomes important for the person who is in problem and others. This is truly a very important safety feature. »
If you wish, you can even allow someone to follow you live during your hike, with data updated every 30 seconds.
AND THE FUTURE
Even though this app already offers a lot of possibilities, the creators are always thinking of ways to improve the user experience.
“We are always thinking regarding innovations and remaining at the cutting edge for quad riders,” says Dubois. Thus, we are trying to set up a discount coupon system, with merchants who have registered accordingly. The quad rider will thus be able to benefit from it during his visit to this business.
“We are also thinking regarding categorizing the different types of trails and more. We want to find a way to finance even more this application which is very expensive for an organization like ours. Some companies have developed their own application, with financial resources significantly greater than those of the Federation.
“Yes, we charge a $20 fee to get the iQuad Pro, but it’s not for profit. All amounts are reinvested in research and updating the application, in order to offer the best to quad riders. »
