In the Kuntsugi/Kuntsukuroi technique, fine particles of gold, silver or platinum are added to the lacquer to join the broken vessels. Thus, when a broken vessel is restored to its original state, the shiny lines of gold and silver at the joints make it even more beautiful.

However, the use of gold, silver or platinum in fixing broken vessels is not a result of any ostentatiousness but owes to the philosophy called “Wabi-Sabi”. The essence of this philosophy derived from Buddhism is that nothing in this world is perfect and flawless. Therefore, we should love everything, no matter how flawed and ugly it may be.

In the same philosophy, it is said that things that are broken should not be thrown away, nor should they be put together in such a way that they feel disjointed. Rather, they should be joined using something precious, such as gold, in such a way that their joints stand out and make the viewer realize that even if something breaks, it is not worthless.

Kintsugi art is the result of this philosophy of reassembling broken vessels to make them even more valuable and preserving them as decorative objects.
