In order to better understand the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on suicide risk in Île-de-France, researchers used an artificial intelligence algorithm to analyze millions of hospitalization documents. This retrospective study thus highlights the extent of the phenomenon of violence once morest women, including at an early age.
The teams from the child and adolescent psychiatry department of the Robert-Debré AP-HP hospital, the AP-HP digital services department and the Pasteur Institute, coordinated by Romain Bey and Professor Richard Delorme, sought to identify new epidemiological parameters to better account for the mental health of the populations of Île-de-France in times of crisis. To do this, they have developed digital tools to automatically analyze millions of documents contained in the computerized files of hospitalized patients using an artificial intelligence algorithm developed by the data scientist Ariel Cohen. The data for this retrospective study were generated by analyzing several million hospitalization documents.
To try to better understand the impact of the Covid-19 crisis on the suicide risk of residents of Île-de-France, researchers studied the dynamics of suicide attempts before and during the pandemic by trying to determine the prevalence of certain known risk factors such as social isolation, history of suicide attempts, domestic, physical or sexual violence. The analysis of nearly three million hospitalization records from 15 different AP-HP hospitals was made possible thanks to the AP-HP health data warehouse. This warehouse is a secure platform dedicated to the analysis, following pseudonymization, of massive data collected in the context of care. This work was supported by the AP-HP Foundation.
Using text processing algorithms, 14,023 hospitalizations for suicide attempts were identified over the two study sub-periods, that is to say before the pandemic (from August 1, 2017 to February 29 2020) and during this period (from March 1, 2020 to June 31, 2022).
« An increase in the number of suicide attempts has been noted during the Covid-19 period. Women make twice as many suicide attempts as men during these periods. This increase in suicide attempts is particularly significant among girls and young women, aged 8 to 25. Alarmingly, domestic, physical and sexual violence are risk factors regularly mentioned in their hospitalization reports. », comments Professor Richard Delorme, researcher in the human genetics and cognitive functions unit at the Pasteur Institute and head of the child and adolescent psychiatry department at the Robert-Debré AP- hospital. HP.
In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, This retrospective study highlights the extent of the phenomenon of violence once morest women, including at an early age. It also demonstrates that the analysis of massive data collected within the AP-HP health data warehouse will make it possible in the future to improve the monitoring of the health needs of the populations of Île-de-France. , in particular by better understanding their mental health.
The results of this study were the subject of a publication published on February 14, 2024 in the journal NPJ Mental Health Research.
