Researchers used a machine learning model to identify three compounds that may fight aging. The results of the study — published in Nature Communications — suggest that the molecules are capable of safely eliminating senescent cells from the body. These are cells that stop dividing and lead to general aging of the body.
The scientists trained the AI to recognize key characteristics of compounds with senolytic properties, i.e. capable of destroying defective cells. The data, from multiple sources, contained more than 2,500 compounds with senolytic or non-senolytic properties. The algorithm was then used to sift through more than 4,000 chemicals, narrowing down just 21 potentially interesting candidates.
Eventually, researchers found that ginkgetin, periplocin, and oleandrin eliminated senescent cells without harming healthy cells, with oleandrin being the most effective. These three substances are natural products found in traditional herbal medicines. Extracted from oleander, oleandrin is said to have antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. However, it is highly toxic above therapeutic levels.
The authors claim that their results show that these compounds have comparable or greater potency than other senolytics, which are very often toxic to healthy cells in the body. They also believe that the use of AI is more cost-effective than standard drug screening methods, such as clinical trials.
