Population growth is boosting the two-wheeler market in Africa. A forum aimed at fostering cooperation between motorcycle industries in Africa is being held in Kigali, the Rwandan capital. During the meeting, participants will discuss the dominant role played by commercial motorcycles in public transport on the African continent. The forum, which started on Thursday, brings together dealers, distributors, investors and stakeholders from the motorcycle industry. A study published in 2017 estimates that the two-wheeler market in Africa will cross the nine billion dollar mark in 2022 “due to population growth, increasing urbanization and the absence of reliable public transport systems”. in many African cities. The largest markets, according to the study, are South Africa, Nigeria and Tanzania, followed by Kenya, Algeria, Uganda, Egypt, Morocco, Angola and from Ethiopia. As part of an ambitious national initiative to cut carbon dioxide emissions by 16% by 2030, Rwanda launched an electric motorcycle project last year. This project aims to help the country achieve its goal of becoming a carbon neutral economy by 2050, but also to accelerate the transition from gasoline engines.
