An 18-year-old Iraqi man was arrested for planning a terrorist attack on her concerts in Vienna

According to Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, “Intensive investigations are continuing and one more person was arrested last night in Vienna.” He is an 18-year-old Iraqi national who is in the entourage of 19-year-old Beran A., an Austrian national from North Macedonia, who is the main suspect in the suicide attack plans at Taylor Swift’s concerts. Mr Carner said the 18-year-old arrested yesterday pledged allegiance to Islamic State on August 6 but was not believed to have been directly involved in planning the concert attack. At the time of his arrest, he was carrying “IS” propaganda material, while he was spreading terrorist propaganda on social media.

For Beran A., who used the nickname “Mo” (from Muhammad), but also for the 17-year-old Turkish-Croatian Luka K. who was already known to the authorities and was arrested outside the “Ernst Happel” stadium, where he would the concerts were taking place, the Prosecutor’s Office issued a request for pre-trial detention, which is expected, according to the representative of the court, Birgit Bornes, to be accepted within the next 48 hours. At the same time, Austrian authorities have asked North Macedonia to conduct an investigation in Beran A.’s hometown of Gostivar in the west of the country, which is mainly ethnic Albanian, although it is not certain that the suspect had lived there in the past , as he was born and raised in Austria. According to an investigation by the magazine “Profil”, Beran A. studied at the commercial school of Neukirchen in Lower Austria and during his studies he repeatedly became particularly violent with his female classmates – at the age of 15 he “grabbed a female student by the neck and pushed her against the wall,” reports the magazine, noting that he had been deemed unfit for military service for “psychological and physical” reasons. The two men face serious charges, for participation in a terrorist and criminal organization. They are also accused of being members of the “Islamic State” and representatives of its goals and intentions.

In the meantime, the third arrested, a 15-year-old of Turkish origin, was temporarily released today, but will continue to be “interrogated intensively” as a witness, the interior minister said. Until now, he has allegedly framed his friend, testifying to the police that Beradier A. has been dealing a lot with explosives lately and that, when asked why he did it, he replied: “You’ll find out later.”

Chancellor Karl Neuhammer (ÖVP) said last night in an interview with Austrian public broadcaster ORF’s “ZIB2” news program that the information reached the Army Intelligence Service, which then passed it on to the State Security and Intelligence Service (DSN). . According to the Austrian News Agency (APA), the Army Intelligence Service received the information from two friendly foreign military intelligence services about 10-14 days ago. This information was said to be quite vague and therefore the Austrian agency carried out further investigation and eventually handed over the result to the DSN, which has been in charge of the case ever since.
